Hi, my name is bill mercer, and i am the associate director of Curatorial Affairs at the panhandle Plains Historical museum. I would like to share about the history of native americans and the culture of native americans in texas. Its very appropriate to begin with the contemporary. Im standing here next to a beautiful piece of sculpture by the noted artist alan houser, who was apache. He was born in oklahoma. He was a descendent of a band removed to oklahoma after his band was captured and later became a terrific artist. As you can see, one of the main foci of this particular piece is a native american on horseback and thats truly the story. Thats the story of native americans in the Southern Plains region and the panhandle especially. What once horses became available to them in the 1600s, particularly the comanches their people, they were able to obtain horses from the traders in santa fe. They were able to utilize the environment much more. I could cover much longer distances. The

That, as part of the steps as we prepare all of those things i just mentioned, eventually to go to mars. Thank you. Going to space is hard. I think we need to remember that there has only been one country that have lower orbit and that is us. We did that a long time ago. The u. S. Is the only country that has been able to figure it out. It is not so easy. It is even harder to go beyond low earth orbit. If we decide to take an inch incremental approach, i think there is a lot to be learned. We can test this big rock that can take us places, test the spacecraft, space is a very hazardous place. There is a lot of radiation and it gets worse as you get further away from the planet. Radiation on hubble was higher than on space stations. Going to the moon is even worse. We need to understand how we can protect our people and we are taking those steps. How are we going to keep them healthy . What are the changes that happen to the body . How will people be able to withstand the journey and la
Areas, it excites them, it is something they think is cool, it is the future, it is making a contribution back to the planet. When you at this opportunity to be entrepreneurs, i think we are onto something. I cant think of anything that would excite them more. In new york city which doesnt have its own nasa center, there is still great interest. Thank you very much. I have seen that with astronaut that travel to new mexico. The young people with all the stem fields. Sorry to excuse myself i hope to get back and ask some additional questions. Thank you both. Thank you very much. Thank you, mr. Chairman. I will be following my colleagues from new mexico after the question dialogue. I dont think there is anything that captures the human imagination like exploration. 28 years ago, i wrote a letter. I would have been nine years old i wrote a letter to nasa. Here is a copy. This is the response back from nasa. Thank you for your recent letter and your recent letter and her interest in wantin
Fullest of the challenges. We can put together whats necessary to send people to mars in an efficient way and we can do it by stepping up, by using some things at the moon but not getting bogged down with a lot of investments that are involved in landing humans building the rockets to land them anticipate then storing them. We dont node to do that anymore. We can observe how other people where we want to do that is at mars. Then we need to invest the things to get to mars. If we invest in an stage to go along with the people that are going there, its going to cost more money. Were going to select and train human beings to do that and were going to send them there. Now, ive gone and come back from a place. Let me ask you, what do you think youre going to do with those people that go there and bring them back to continue to pay off the investment of theyre being the first, the pioneers, the building up of a growing settlement. They can do far more by keeping mars occupied helping the new
