As any fan of beauty pageants will tell you – and there are still many – the high-stakes competitions are never short of drama behind the scenes, irrespective of where they are held.
And sometimes, as was witnessed at the Mrs Sri Lanka World contest last week, the theatrics can spill on to the stage on live TV.
Reigning Mrs World Caroline Jurie on Saturday announced she was giving up her crown following her arrest after she unceremoniously snatched the crown from this year’s Mrs Sri Lanka winner and gave it to a runner-up. Jurie, who is also from Sri Lanka, made the shock move after Pushpika de Silva was crowned in a video that has since gone viral.
But Harvey said what he did next was what he considers stupid. I took my stupid (expletive) back out there, he said. I should have let them announce it the next day in the newspaper. I wouldn t have caught none of the hell I caught.
He added: I really didn t make no (expletive) mistake. I did what they told me in my ear and I read that teleprompter. I took the card out there and showed the third name that they handed to me from the stage, but I had my thumb on it, it wasn t no third name.
Harvey said the next morning it was the headline in every country and resulted in harassment from people writing him obscene letters in different languages.
