Commercial and charter operator PNG Air is continuing to operate domestically, despite the impact of COVID-19 on air travel, because in Papua New Guinea domestic air services are often the only viable means of transportation.
William Kalipa, general manager for PNG Air’s engineering and maintenance and who manages the airline’s Continuing Airworthiness Management Group (CAMG), says domestic air services are essential because many places are remote due to the country’s mountainous, densely forested terrain combined with limited road and sea ferry infrastructure.
Kalipa says the airline is continuing to receive requests from local governments to fly to more airstrips in remote parts of the country. PNG Air will continue to consider opening routes to new destinations, but the airline does need to do risk assessments of these airstrips, he says. The airline relies on local authorities to develop and maintain the airstrips. ....

A 50-year-old man from Milne Bay has become the first Papua New Guinean to head an operation owned by an Australian Stock Exchange (ASX 200) company.
Iso Ealedona from Misima Island has been appointed by St Barbara Limited as General Manager of its Simberi Operations in New Ireland.

AMSA assist Papua New Guinea in thirteen person rescue

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has helped save the lives of thirteen persons who had been missing for over a week in the Solomon Sea.
The vessel was reported to have broken down on the 22
nd of January in the vicinity of Alcester Island, 585 kilometres east of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, with thirteen persons on board.
The Papua New Guinea search and rescue authorities requested AMSA’s help on the 27
th of January to issue a broadcast to shipping for the missing boat. On Friday 29
thof January, AMSA deployed its Cairns-based Challenger jet to conduct a search for the vessel, focusing on an area of approximately 5926 square kilometres. ....

MISSING BOUGAINVILLE BOATERS TURN UP IN MILNE BAY

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (The National, Jan. 4) – A boat with seven people on board that went missing in Bougainville for about 28 days had been found in Milne Bay province, Papua New Guinea, last Monday, Milne Bay provincial disaster coordinator Eric Balaria said yesterday.
They were found near Sudest island and were taken by a fishing boat to Misima island. They are now in the care of the district officers.
We are now making arrangements for them to be repatriated back to Bougainville. ....
