The competition was stacked Saturday at the GoPro Mountain Games bouldering contest in Vail, an event that drew massive crowds and doubled as a North American Cup competition. The North American Cup is one level.
Bend Endurance Academy is sending seven athletes to USA Climbing's Youth National Championships in Chicago. These athletes have been competing in the three disciplines of bouldering, lead/top-rope, and speed climbing over the past 9 months. On their journey to Nationals, the climbers must compete at Local, Regional, and Divisional competitions to move on through to the next round. In order to compete at Nationals in their chosen discipline, climbers must place in the top six in the Division, which is made up of all youth climbers from Oregon and Washington. The athletes will be competing with hundreds of others from around the United States, coming together to try their best on the hardest climbs possible. Local junior champions talk about how they re adapting to climbing during a pandemic, and what they ve learned from the prolonged pause of normal life Mira Capicchioni (15), Moxie Hovorka (14), and Shae McCarl (12) are three junior competitive and outdoor climbers from Bend who train at the Bend Rock Gym through the Bend Endurance Academy.
