Raising concerns that Maharashtra should not become like Uttar Pradesh - where news of witnesses being killed in high-profile cases have made headlines - Bombay High Court has ordered for witness protection to survivors and witnesses in cases of sexual assault and prostitution.
The division bench of Justice S S Shinde and Justice Manish Pitale directed the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Mira-Bhayander Vasai-Virar Commissionerate to immediately provide the protection.
About the case
The high court was hearing a plea filed by a woman, who is from Rajasthan, but now lives near Mumbai. She told the court that in 2011 (when she was 16) her parents forced her to work at a dance bar in Borivli area of Mumbai. Thereafter, she was forced into prostitution, along with her three sisters and four other minor girls. ....
