A University of Minnesota professor who is a widely recognized researcher and advocate for bees is retiring after more than 30 years. Marla Spivak created the U of M Bee Squad and the Bee Lab, and was awarded a McArthur Genius grant.
A beekeeping course at a minimum security prison in Faribault, Minn., is setting up a potential career path for some inmates. The training includes an outdoor classroom where inmates take care of bees but the bees are also taking care of the inmates.
Minnesota is home to over 460 species of bees of all shapes, sizes, and colors. These bees face several challenges including habitat loss and a lack of pollen and nectar-rich flowers. University of Minnesota Bee Squad’s Brooke Nikkila will teach you how to tell the difference between different bees, wasps, flies, and even moths as well as how to support these pollinators in your own backyard.
Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College (FDLTCC), in partnership with the Northeast Minnesota Beekeepers Association, is hosting a virtual symposium called “Beekeeping and More!” on Saturday, February 13, 2021, for anyone interested in learning about beekeeping as a hobby or as a commercial enterprise. This year’s virtual symposium will run via Zoom. Pre-registration is required as the Zoom links to the day’s presentations will be emailed to registered participants.
The first Beekeeping and More! workshop held in 2016 drew more than 150 beekeepers and the event has kept growing, making it one of the largest beekeeping workshops in northern Minnesota. Session topics include equipment, general troubleshooting, beginning beekeeping, hive health, and bee behavior.
