Peru, home to 68% of the world s tropical glaciers, has lost 56.22% of these ecosystems in the last six decades due to climate change, according to the Ministry of the Environment (Minam).
Peruvian and British authorities have highlighted the mutual interest that exists between Peru and the United Kingdom to strengthen cooperation ties in matters related to climate change, green finance, forest conservation, sustainable infrastructure, as well as in the field of environmental science and research.
10:18 | Lima, May. 19. The creation of the Environmental Crimes Functional Unit (UNIDA) of the Ministry of the Environment (Minam) aims to strengthen the coordination of actions focused on the prevention, reduction, and monitoring of crimes that threaten nature such as illegal logging, illegal wildlife trade, and illegal mining, among others.
According to the functional unit s coordinator, Jimpson Davila, this space will serve to establish strategies to deal with the commission of environmental crimes in the country and will promote multisectoral mechanisms in the face of threats and crimes committed against defenders of biodiversity.
To that effect, the Government enacted Supreme Decree No. 004-2021-JUS in April this year, which approves the creation of an Intersectoral Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders.
