Gov’t lifts several coronavirus restrictions - public transport, open markets to resume operations

The Georgian government has announced the lifting of several coronavirus-related restrictions due to the decrease in daily infections. 
Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia stated earlier today that all public transport around the country will resume operations starting February 8, as well as open markets. 
Starting February 15 in-person studies will resume in the cities of Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Rustavi. 
Public transport, open markets and food facilities (except delivery service) will not work on the weekend.  ....

New head of Georgia's gov't administration appointed

Former Head of the Georgian National Security Council Kakhaber Kemoklidze will be the new head of the government administration.
Kakha Kemoklidze has been working in our team for years. He is one of the worthy public servants  and has a great experience in serving the country, Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said after appointing Kemoklidze as the Head of the government Adminisration.
Before appointing as the head of the administration, Kemoklidze was leading the National Security Council’s Office of Georgia, Agenda.ge reported.
During 2018-2019 he held the position of the Director of Information-Analytical Department at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia. ....

The first doses of Pfizer vaccine that will be administered to health workers are due to arrive in Georgia by late February.
Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia has made an announcement following his phone conversation with the World Health Organisation (WHO) head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus earlier today.

Russia guilty of violations during 2008 war with Georgia, says Europe's top court


Europe s top human rights court on Thursday found Russia responsible for a swath of violations in Georgia s breakaway regions after the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.
Georgia hailed the verdict by the European Court of Human Rights as a major victory.
President Salome Zurabishvili described the ruling as “historic,” noting that Georgia was “recognised as a victim of this war and it is a great achievement for our country, our society, our history, and our future.
Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia also described the verdict as a landmark move, saying that “the case against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights has ended with Georgia’s victory.” ....

Georgian president visits Brussels in push for 2024 EU membership application

The President of Georgia Salome Zourabishvili is paying a visit to all three on European institutions Thursday and Friday (21-22 January) to cement Georgia’s bid for an EU membership in 2024.
The visit of the Caucasian country’s head of state comes in the wake of the new government’s reaffirmation that Euro-Atlantic integration remains top priority of Tbilisi, and the departure from politics of billionaire leader of Georgia’s ruling party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, who is widely seen as the Western-backed country’s most powerful man.
“We seek de-occupation and peaceful restoration of our territorial integrity while continuing to move closer to the US, EU and NATO,” Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia wrote on Twitter. ....
