Updated: Share Article AAA A farmer was trampled to death by a tusker near Halekere in Sakleshpur taluk on Friday night. The incident came to light on Saturday morning when passers-by noticed the body and informed Forest Department officials. This is the fifth death due to man-elephant conflict in the district since January. Shivana Gowda, 65, of Halekere was walking home from a bus stop, after attending a funeral at Banavara in Arsikere taluk, when he encountered the elephant. The incident is believed to have happened around 7.30 p.m. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. Forest and police officials who reached the spot were met with irate villagers who demanded that the Deputy Commissioner visit and assure them of a permanent solution to the man-animal conflict in the area. Forest officials handed over a cheque for ₹2 lakh to the family members of the deceased. ....
‘Relief for cattle death being reviewed’ The State government is thinking of covering agriculture crops near the forests under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bhima Yojana, which will help enhance the compensation for crop losses caused by wild animals. Forest Minister Arvind Limbavali told the Legislative Council that the forest officials will speak to agriculture officials on whether this issue can be worked out. “Farmers have to pay just 2% of the premium amount while the rest will be equally shared between State and Central governments,” he said, The Minister also said that the current compensation of ₹10,000 for death of cattle due to attack of wild animals is being reviewed. “Under the calamity compensation, each head of cattle is given ₹30,000,” Mr. Limbavali said in his reply to a question by Congress member Veena Achaiah pertaining to three deaths reported recently due to tiger attack near Nagarahole. ....
Delegation to be taken to Delhi soon The State government has decided to take a delegation of MLAs to the national capital to seek funds from the Centre under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) for erecting barricades in forest areas to prevent entry of wild animals into human habitats. Forest Minister Arvind Limbavali on Thursday chaired a meeting with MLAs whose constituencies witnessed man-animal conflicts and said barricades would be erected in forest areas covering 624 km. Already 165 km had been fenced and ₹550 crore would be required to fence the rest of the forest areas. The State required funds from the Centre and a delegation of MLAs would be taken to Delhi soon to submit a memorandum, Mr. Limbavali said. ....
