‪“It is the prosecution case that the circumstances created by the defendants led to the freedom of these workers effectively being over-ridden,” Mr Reid alleged, “and that they were compelled to work long hours in bad conditions for little pay, their labour being exploited for the benefit of the defendants.”‬
‪Several workers, said the prosecutor, had identity cards taken away until travel cost debt was repaid; and were required to live in “very dirty” insect-infested multi-occupancy accommodation in Carlisle where rats were also seen. ....

A car wash worker was unable to stand because water had eaten away at his feet when he worked nine days in a row without proper equipment, a jury heard.
The 39-year-old Romanian national said was given just £20 in his first pay packet at Shiny on Warwick Road, Carlisle, during early 2017.
He was also left very tired and hungry, Carlisle Crown Court was told.
Three men, Sitar Ali and brothers Defrim and Jetmir Paci, all deny modern-day slavery charges.

A car wash employee has told a jury he was left very tired, hungry and with just £20 in his first pay packet as he worked nine days in a row for a Carlisle business at the centre of modern slavery allegations.
At the city’s crown court today, a second Romanian national who was employed at Shiny on Warwick Road, during early 2017, gave evidence during the trial of three men who deny alleged involvement in forced labour and arranging for people to come to the UK with a view to their being exploited.
The man spoke of paying £130 for his journey from Eastern Europe to England. ....

An employee of a Carlisle car wash at the centre of alleged modern slavery crimes has told a jury of working long hours for little pay, and having buy gloves from Tesco to protect his hands from cleaning chemicals.
Giving evidence at the city’s crown court today, the man recalled paying a company 150 euros to transport him by coach from his native Romania to Carlisle in 2016.

Giving evidence at the city’s crown court today, the man recalled paying a company 150 euros to transport him by coach from his native Romania to Carlisle in 2016.
After a two-day journey he arrived on a Sunday, was housed in multi-occupancy accommodation at Compton Street, and began work at Shiny on Warwick Road the next day.
Twelve people shared six Compton Street bedrooms and all had to use a single bathroom, with a second out of action. ....
