As Israel heads into its fourth elections in just two years, it can be easy to be fed up with. This all serves as a reminder that you never know what is going on in another’s personal life. As Jews, we are obligated to give the benefit of the doubt, as the Torah says in Leviticus 19:15 “With righteousness shall you judge your fellow fairly. “לֹא־תַעֲשׂ֥וּ עָ֙וֶל֙ בַּמִּשְׁפָּ֔ט לֹא־תִשָּׂ֣א פְנֵי־דָ֔ל וְלֹ֥א תֶהְדַּ֖ר פְּנֵ֣י גָד֑וֹל בְּצֶ֖דֶק תִּשְׁפֹּ֥ט עֲמִיתֶֽךָ.” Something that my parents taught me growing up is that G-d judges you the way you judge others. Though it is translated as “charity” that distracts from the main point. It is better understood as citizen’s obligation, responsibility or righteousness. Its shades of meaning don’t revolve around feelings, they overlap with justice. We don’t do tzedakah because we are so moved or because it feels good. Those are nice side effects that are often present.
