“Where is the flag? Why isn’t Old Glory flying to the breeze there?” These were the questions being asked by city residents outside the Ross County Courthouse 100 years ago. It was Flag Day, June 14, 1921, and the entire city was decked out in red, white, and blue. The Stars and Stripes floated in the breeze outside storefronts, private homes and government buildings. At the Ross County Courthouse, though, the flagpole stood naked.
According to the Gazette, the reason the Stars and Stripes was missing was because the “old flag flapped itself to pieces, was worn out and had to be placed in the discard.” For some unknown reason, the County Commissioners failed to replace the old flag. ....
