National labs M2FCT researchers outline prospects and challenges for hydrogen fuel-cells in heavy-duty transportation

National labs M2FCT researchers outline prospects and challenges for hydrogen fuel-cells in heavy-duty transportation
In 2020, the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) launched the Million Mile Fuel Cell Truck Consortium (M
2FCT) to leverage the potential opportunity fuel cells in the heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) market and to align with the H2@Scale vision for clean and affordable hydrogen across multiple sectors in the economy. (Earlier post.)
With $50 million funded by DOE HFTO over five years, a team of five national labs co-led by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) have set out with a 2030 goal of demonstrating systems that have a 25,000-hour, or 1-million mile, lifetime for long-haul trucks. ....

Commercial truck electrification is within reach

But policies are needed to spur widespread adoption.

When it comes to electric vehicles, particularly for heavy-duty trucks, the limitations of battery technology are often seen as the main barrier to widespread adoption. However, a new analysis concludes that it s the lack of appropriate policies around adoption incentives, charging infrastructure, and electricity pricing that prevents widespread electrification of commercial trucking fleets.
Researchers from the Department of Energy s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and the University of California, Los Angeles published a new study that makes the case for prioritizing public policy to help move long-haul trucking from diesel to electric. Doing so will mean huge gains in addressing the climate crisis and avoiding premature deaths due to local vehicular pollution, which disproportionately affects communities of color. ....

The Green Hydrogen Dream is No Longer a Dream

The Green Hydrogen Dream is No Longer a Dream
Dec 14, 2020
Hydrogen-fuel-cell cars have struggled to find mainstream buyers, but elsewhere in the transportation sector a mass movement towards green hydrogen fuel has begun to spark significant activity. Interest has picked up in the trucking, railway and aviation sectors, and the latest development could have widespread implications for the cargo shipping industry and for ferry travel, too.
The road to green hydrogen
According to the Clean Cargo Working Group, carbon emissions from the shipping industry have actually dropped as a percentage of global emissions in recent years. They now account for an estimated 2 to 3 percent of global emissions, down from a steady 3 percent in 2012. ....
