Imagery. don t look for u.s. military satellites to go down there. they have other national security needs that they are going to stick with, we are told. i think it would be very useful. it seems like we bounce back and forth every day. the northern, the southern, the most hopeful, all of that. let s just regroup for a second about what we are really talking about here. why the focus on the southern arc? it has never gone away as being the u.s. view that it is most likely the plane went down there. it may not have. the u.s. view has always been the southern arc. why do they say that? because there has been no sign of the plane anywhere else. it leads investigators to believe it most likely went down in the indian ocean. we had seen and been reported that for many days now. the northern arc, that large land mass in central asia, the problem is, there is no sign of the plane. no verified radar blip, if you will. truly, verified to be this plane at a point in time. no satellite imagery s ....

Calculating all that data from the time they lost contact from the last transmission of the airplane, that s how they come to this box they re looking at right now. but officials are saying every day, the search box is going to change as time goes on and the urgency will probably grow. that box still the size of about new mexico. so, does this mean they have effectively given up on the northern route? well, technically no, but i have to tell you, since this happened, every u.s. military and intelligence official i ve spoken so says they ve genuinely believe most likely it is somewhere sadly in the indian ocean and why do they say this? of course, it s because the u.s. has pretty good satellite coverage in asia, china, pakistan, those countries in there because they watch for ballistic missile launches. u.s., the most classified military satellites as far as anybody publicly knows right now, have seen absolutely nothing that indicates a plane is up in asia. ....

In the digital age when we ve got gps and our cell phones in cars, how do you lose an airplane? malaysia airlines flight 370 also had gps and a trans ponder sending signals. the jet was tracked by radar but now that we know the transponder signal was not operational when the plane disappeared it s not going to do anything anymore. once it s gone off, it s not going to come back on. from the gps standpoint, all that is is mainly for the aircraft to know where it is, for the pilots to know where they are. there s not something inherent in the gps that says, here i am over here. reporter: this is now a high tech search. pentagon officials tell cnn the navy is using mh 60 helicopters, at least one orion helicopter in the air. they can detect movement. the pentagon won t say if it s using military satellites but ....

Todd. he joins us now from washington. in the search for this plane, could military satellites be an option here? certainly they could be an option, don. we ve been talking to the pentagon about the assets that they have deployed here. they are not telling us whether they re using military satellites or not. they just don t want to give out that information. they do give information about the 22 aircraft, the 40 sea-going vessels that they re using, but they re not telling us a lot about satellites. you talk about the transponder, you talk about gps on these planes, could they be used to track it? the transponder was either turned off or destroyed somehow. that is not an option. once that s turned off, it doesn t come back. gps, yes, those devices could conceivably be used, but if a gps is destroyed or turned off, somehow that doesn t emit some kind of a natural signal or a signal that kicks in automatically from the wreckage of the plane. as for the other technologies being used, we ....
