have a military resolution but without a political plan it won t get sorted out. in my mind it is a mix of both. from the beginning i always thought that the only language assad understood was military action. his father was no different. without some credible threat of military action he would view it as a carte blanche. and he has. we haven been seeing these kind of attacks for years. at the end of the day it absolutely needs to be both. i don t think you can have only one or the other. under the obama administration i would argue there were missed opportunities for targeted military strikes that would have shown we were closely monitoring the situation and that we wouldn t allow it to escalate after a certain point. and certainly to force it into a democratic transition. now, what you are talking about obviously includes a political deal, but it needs to be a mix of military action that s significantly undermining the syrian military and some kind of plan with carrots and sticks

the sanctions on north korea to an extent that a do not do business sign would be on their country s back. we need to do that. pass even tougher sanctions and go to the table at the same time. saying to china, and south korea, if do you business them we ll sanction you as well. this is an existential threat to the united states and we want to find diplomatic resolution of it and not a military resolution of it. and we need to tighten the economic sanctions in order to get north korea to respond in a way that it has not done so yet. is it your understanding that the president s message today was sort of vetted and developed as an intentional signal? or do you interpret it as essentially improvised? i hope that there is a plan behind it.
