hello, welcome to the programme. a0 migrants who crossed the english channel were brought ashore by the dover lifeboat this morning. so far, just short of 3000 people have crossed in the first two months of this year. that s twice as many as the equivalent period last year. the prime minister says stopping these boats is one of his top five priorities. tomorrow, we ll see how he proposes to do it. his new policy, that s been heavily trailed, suggests that going forward migrants who cross this way will be removed and banned from future re entry and automatically their application for british citizenship will be rejected. we will talk about what is proposed in a second, but let s first hear from someone farzad. he arrived by small boat in 2019, fleeing persecution in iran. he was granted asylum a year ago. he s been speaking to bbc radio 4. now, farzad, if you were in france, where presumably you were safe, and you heard that it was the law in the uk that if you arrived o ....
In the uk that if you arrived on a boat, you would either be sent to rwanda or sent back home, but you would not be allowed to claim asylum, do you think that would ve made any difference to what you did? well, for me, i was in a country that i have no language, i don t have any relative and i don t think of. i couldn t think of any future for myself, again i wouldn t think that. i don t think that i would ve stayed anyway cos regardless of whatever uk government would propose to do to my case, i will be sure that it wouldn t be worse than my situation back in iran or any situation that i was during the trip. in 2013, the austalian government brought in something similar. it was called 0peration sovereign borders, a military led operation that was intoduced to stop asylum seekers arriving by boat. people coming by boat would be ....
