hello, everyone, tlahank yo for joining me, i m fredricka whitfield. recovery efforts underway offer the south carolina coastline following the take down of a suspected chinese spy balloon on saturday. the u.s. military blasting the balloon out of the sky after it drifts over the atlantic near myrtle beach. president biden saying that he ordered the military on wednesday to take the balloon down as soon as possible. and now efforts are underway to recover the debris and analyze it to find out what it may have been doing as it drifted across the u.s. over the last few days. meanwhile china is accusing the u.s. of overreacing and expr expressing strong dissatisfaction and the balloons destruction. from all angles to the capital to the coast where the balloon was shot down. let s begin with dianne gallagher where she is live in surfside beach where recovery efforts is underway. what is being located and discovered? reporter: so, fred, we re in the surfside myrtle beach area
learned about this on tuesday it was his inclination to shoot it down. so we asked the military to draw up some options and they presented them to those to him on wednesday. where then he gave that official order to shoot it down. he wanted it down as soon as possible. and they recommend that they wait, the debris could have made major damage on both property and people so they recommended he wait. he accepted that recommendation. now, of course, we know that it took seven days since that balloon entered the u.s. air space to get over open water where the military then shot it down. but there was a lot of back and forth conversations with the president, with military, with faa, really trying to all coordinate this very, very intricate military excursion here. now we know that because president biden waited seven days for that balloon to hit open water to shoot it down,
could be like in a democracy. ukrainian people are prepared to fight for their country. they re obviously outgunned by the russian military, but the european allies, the united states are helping them with lethal support, ammunition, armaments, training, a sharing of intelligence. we re going to do everything we can to provide assistance to them to fight and defend their country. look, as one woman said, we ve tasted freedom, we re not going back. these are people that are prepared to be in this fight and to defend their country against the aggression of vladimir putin. and hopefully he understands the entire international community will impose devastating, crippling sanctions that will ruin his economy, bother the oligarchs that surround him and the hope is to prevent him from actually engaging this military excursion because he understands what the impact will be of those sanctions. congressman, given what you ve just said and the amassing of troops along the
military will be bringing even more forces, more material and combat experience to bear in order to really snuff out the resistance. vladimir putin has bet the farm on this invasion. he doesn t have anything else to lose with the united program coming from the west, from the united states and he needs to be able to show his public that this military excursion, this adventure that was so costly economically for them has shown some kind of victory. there s just nothing else that he can go home with at this point. that means that this moment is so dangerous, yasmin, not just for the ukrainian military but for the civilians left in this country, the ones that vice president passed through this city to get out. i m so sorry for what you and your team have gone through. you and i were on the air together as you mentioned when you asked to stop filming because you knew you were going through a checkpoint. that seemed as if it was easier than you thought it was going to be and of course you
