Government officials have proposed making recommendations for early years support services outlined in a review by the MP Andrea Leadsom mandatory, in order to secure much-needed funding from the Treasury to implement them. Otherwise, there is concern that councils and health partners will be unable to meet the recommendations for services to support parents with children under two set out in the recent review, The best start for life: a vision for the 1,001 critical days. The review, published in March, called for areas to provide a “welcoming hub for families” to access services including childcare, early education and healthcare, as well as advice on jobs and training and an empowered ‘Start for Life’ workforce. Local authorities were also asked to produce a clear publication for parents in their area on services they should expect to receive such as health visits, and localised and specialist support. ....

The scheme – It Takes a Village – run by Ultra Education, which is based in The Granville Centre, in Carlton Vale, seeks to address “the root cause of [educational] underachievement” among boys of this heritage. It was awarded just over £227,000 and will work with schools, families, and communities to improve Black Caribbean boys’ skills and give them a greater voice to “increase life chances and close the gaps in educational attainment”. ....

Brent Council s awards aim to recognise young people who try to make a difference in their community and those who often put others before themselves. They are aimed at young people aged 11 to 24 (up to 25 for the Young Disability Champion award) who have excelled, often overcoming their own personal difficulties to do so. The award categories are Volunteer of the Year; Community Spirit Award; Most Improved Person Award; Role Model Award; Young Leader Award; Brent Young Environmentalist Award; Young Disability Champion Award; and Special Recognition. ....
