The fire started just after 4 p.m. Wednesday inside a small storage warehouse at the K-Solv facility before spreading to a second warehouse. Mikie Sopczak, Director of Environmental Health and Safety and Security for K-Solv, said it happened while a product was being transferred between containers. “This was not large tanks and large bulks,” said Sopczak during a press conference Thursday morning. HOUSTON – A chemical distribution company K-solv is the owner of the large industrial building on fire Wednesday in the Channelview area, according to the Harris County Fire Marshall’s Office. The fire started around 4 p.m. during a dump transfer operation when one product is transferred into a small container, according to Mikie Sopczak, the director of environmental health, safety and security for K-Solv. The fire marshal’s office also noted that some of the known chemicals on the site included Hydrochloric acid, acetone, ethanol, ethylene dichloride and other acids. According to a TCEQ company history search, K-solv received a “satisfactory” rating in September 2020. ....
Firefighters worked to douse a massive fire that broke out Wednesday evening at the K-Solv Chemicals facility in Channelview, TX. A two-alarm blaze ignited in facility at about 4 p.m. and crews worked until about 7 p.m. to extinguish the flames, Click2Houston.com reported. K-Solv’s director of environmental health, safety, and security, Mikie Sopczak, told the news broadcaster that the incident started as product was being transferred between drums. A local ABC News affiliate said smoke from the fire was so dense it could be seen on doppler radar. The City is aware of a large, black cloud originating in the Channelview area that is visible from the Deer Park area. At this time, there is no impact to Deer Park.
