in many cities, the cleanup from the eight-day deluge is underway. the final storm did the most damage. inland and coastal communities now buried in mud. some canyon roads completely washed out. residents doing all they could to battle those rising waters. brad wheelis has the story from l.a. reporter: san diego is submerged. stranded guests had to be rescued at this inn, surrounded by water. you don t really know what to do in a situation like that. reporter: qualcomm stadium looked more like a big, dirty pool. but officials say it will be ready for thursday s college bowl game. nearly four feet of water raced through the streets of laguna beach, leaving a mess for residents and businesses to clean up. in silverado canyon, rain loosened boulders. what sounds like thunder is a loft rocks coming down in that creek. and they re hitting these trees. it s cutting away if embankment on the side. reporter: a devastating mudslide in highland, california, devastat ....

shawn? reporter: the fire happened in the back of this building on 75th street, the northeast section. investigator say there was heavy smoke, but only a moderate amount of fire. none of it reached the roof, which only deepened the mystery tonight of how the roof collapse happened. members of 115 dropped off flowers and held a moment of silence for the victim. as nighttime set in on chicago s southeast side, the scars of destruction and grief could not be disguysed. our thoughts and prayers are always with the fire department as a result of today s fire. today s tragic fire demonstrates selflessness, the commitment of the dedicated men and women who are 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ensure the safety of all of our citizens. reporter: the first crew docked at this business just before 7 a.m. soon the fire was knocked down, and the search for hot spots and squatters inside began. people seek refuge. we took no building as being vacant. this building had no si ....
