During the forenoon of July 26, Captain (Navy) (Capt(N)) Matthew Coates, Commander Naval Training Group, presided over a ceremony that saw the command of HMCS Venture pass from Commander (Cdr) Mike Stefanson to Cdr Darren Sleen.Guests, including friends, family, and military colleagues past and present, gathered before the Collier Building at Work Point. Investigation underway into HMCS Winnipeg sailor going overboard


A memorial service for 47-year-old Master Sailor Duane Earle, involving family members and the 230-member crew, took place Friday morning aboard HMCS Winnipeg during a stop at Canadian Forces Ammunition Depot Rocky Point in Metchosin.
The frigate sailed into CFB Esquimalt at 3:15 p.m. Friday as Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan and Royal Canadian Navy Commander Vice-Admiral Art McDonald looked on from Duntze Head.
Cmdr. Mike Stefanson, the ship’s commanding officer, told reporters Friday that interviews are underway with the ship’s company, particularly those who were close to Earle, and those who saw him last, before he went overboard. ....

Master Sailor Duane Earle, 47, is believed to have accidentally fallen overboard while serving on HMCS Winnipeg early Monday, about 925 kilometres off the California coast. A 30-hour search ended Tuesday evening, but Earle s body was not found.
