MINERAL POINT, Wis. – The COVID-19 pandemic overshadowed and worsened a deadly epidemic that touches so many in the country.
The challenges of the pandemic drove many to substance use, whether it was a new habit or an old one.
‘I had no one to talk to’: COVID disrupts usual support system
“I had a really bad life until moving here,” said Shaun Jaco, sitting on a swinging bench outside his Mineral Point home. “I never had friends like I have up here.”
It took a change of scenery and a new support system for his life to look brighter. ....

EMS Committee introduces Medical Director, approves staff items
DARLINGTON – The Emergency Medical Services of Lafayette County committee meeting was called to order by chair Bob Boyle on April 13 – 7:00 a.m.
The Medical Director for the department – Mike Repplinger was introduced.
Repplinger stated, “I primarily works at UW Hospital in Madison in emergency medicine for about ten years. I conduct EMT and paramedic training with different departments and hospitals. I recently picked up some work in Darlington and fell in love with the place and it just so happened that this job opened up. I thought I could help coordinate things and apply my previous experience and training. I’m looking forward to continued collaboration.” ....

WISCONSIN The Badger State has seen a spike in drug overdoses in the COVID-19 pandemic, especially when it comes to opioids.
Up more than 30% in some areas of the state, this is part of a national trend. 
Dr. Mike Repplinger told Spectrum News 1 that UW Health was seeing more overdoses leading up to the pandemic.  
I can ​say particularly at UW we ve had about a 15% increase year after year for the past three or four years,” Repplinger said.
But he said nothing compared to 2020 where overdoses increased 35% in Dane County from 2019. ....

UW Health notices a spike in opioid overdoses due to COVID-19

MADISON, Wis. UW Health officials say there has been a spike in opioid overdoses and deaths over the past year which they link to the COVID-19 disease.
Since the pandemic reached the state of Wisconsin in early February of last year, weekly rates of hospital visits for opioid overdoses increased by as much as 45% compared to 2019.
According to Mike Repplinger, the increase in overdoses cannot be directly linked to COVID-19 but there are many factors associated with COVID that are known risk factors for drug usage. ....
