FREMONT - A generation ago, girls enrolled in skilled trades programs at tech centers likely would have been labeled as rebellious or too incompetent to keep up with the boys. Opinions have come a long way, and today the girls at Vanguard Career and Technology Center who learn to weld metal and fix cars are not considered anomalies. They are just another student creating their own success.
There aren’t many girls learning skilled trades at Vanguard. Every year, each trade program normally draws one or two female students, but those who come often discover a passion for a trade, which opens new career opportunities for them. For some, like Ross sophomore Mariana Garza, those opportunities already have begun.
