Armenian Foreign Ministry Still In Limbo

Armenian Foreign Ministry Still In Limbo 1 ժամ առաջ Կիսվել Տարածել Տպել High-ranking officials from the Armenian Foreign Ministry were conspicuously absent from a cabinet meeting and a parliament session on Thursday, raising more questions about their relationship with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian. Foreign Minister Ara Ayvazian stepped down on May 27 following an emergency meeting of Armenia’s Security Council which discussed mounting tensions on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. Ayvazian was formally relieved of his duties on Monday hours after addressing the Foreign Ministry staff at a farewell meeting. He hinted that he decided to quit because of disagreeing with government decisions which he believes could put the country’s sovereignty and national security at risk. He did not go into details.

Ter-Petrosian Warns Against Unconstitutional Elections

Տարածել Տպել Former President Levon Ter-Petrosian has accused the Armenian authorities of planning to hold snap parliamentary elections in violation of the country’s constitution. The constitution stipulates that such elections can be held only if Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian resigns and the Armenian parliament twice fails to elect another head of the government. Pashinian resigned for that purpose on Sunday. He made clear that he will continue to perform his duties at least until election day. Some opposition figures and lawyers critical of the government maintain that the constitution does not allow Pashinian to remain in office after his resignation. Ter-Petrosian effectively echoed their view in a statement released on Monday.

The leader of the Bright Armenia Party (LHK), Edmon Marukian, said he and Pashinian spoke by phone in the morning and will meet on Wednesday for further discussions on the proposed elections. Marukian himself called for the conduct of such polls late last week, portraying that as a compromise solution to the crisis deepened by the Armenian military’s unprecedented demand for the government’s resignation. He said Pashinian should stop, for his part, trying to fire the country’s top general, Onik Gasparian.
