MADISON, Wis. UW-Madison leaders said Monday that several students may face disciplinary action for violations of public health orders and/or unlawful activity at the Mifflin Street Block Party.
The statement from the university comes after footage of a vandalized SUV at the block party circulated on social media over the weekend.
“We are beginning investigations into the conduct of several students. Any students found to have violated laws, public health orders or campus policies may face university disciplinary action in addition to sanctions by the city,” the statement reads. “In advance of the event, UW–Madison messaged all students urging them to avoid crowds and to continue to follow all health protocols.”
Mifflin residents said Madison Police went door-to-door earlier his week, reminding them of Public Health Madison and Dane Countyâs order, which doesnât limit outdoor gatherings, but does require social distancing.
âTheyâre sort of being upfront and honest with us, and weâre being upfront and honest with them,â Senior Matt Leidig said.
Officers patrolled on foot during the party on Saturday.
âWeâre in the middle still of a pandemic,â Officer Gracia Rodriguez said. âSo, that our number one priority, safety.â
Their job was to make sure things didnât get out of hand.
âJust having those conversations with people who are engaging here today, addressing social distancing,â Rodriguez said.
