What i hear and what i see, and i m all the time following different sources of my friends. i ve seen videos from different places like kyiv right now have a lot of fire. but people are fighting. people are standing for their grounds, and that s what i witnessed when i was on the grounds of ukraine that people are determined. people believe in what they re fighting. they re fighting for their freedom, fighting for the future of their kids. and before it was maybe the sort of soviet government that they take it fast, no it s not what happens because ukrainians are determined to stand for every piece of their land. and that s for their belief, and that s they ve achieved during 92 days of midan, and that s ....
Actions. ukrainians were fighting on the eastern ukraine for many years. but unfortunately all the mens and womens, all the peace agreements, they were just persuading ukrainians not to act, not to defend territories. and putin just got the possibility. he saw that he can do whatever he wants and that no one can stop him. what is different about ukrainians and ukraine as a whole as they face russia versus the revolution of midan? it is different. because in 2015 when putin attacked and occupied crimea, we were just after the revolution we were a country that were just shaping. we were disorganized and we were just after huge shock of revolution. and we were in the process of election, choosing new president, and today we are ....
Now, don, that is really emblematic of all that. that is irpin. that s a suburb of kyiv towards the northwest. you can see this drone footage flying across everything destroyed there. we spoke to the mayor of irpin over the past couple of days, and he s been telling us that there is still massive shelling going on by the russians even as the ukrainians say they re trying to press them and are having some success at pushing them back, don. and fred, a u.s. official says russian forces have stopped moving toward kyiv but air attacks, long-range strikes still happening as you said. they re there, on the back foot but still happening. what does this mean for the residents there? well, first of all, i would say that that is fairly accurate to the description of what we ve been witnessing throughout the course of the day. and certainly seems as though on the ground for the people here it has become a little more calm. i was in the city center today at the midan in independence ....
Their ground down. our fredredric pleitgen shows us how the capital is preparing for what comes next. reporter: the ukrainian capital kyiv is still very much on a war footing. we re right in the city center. as you can see there s a tank bar barrier there was setup here with sandbags, obviously a defensive position. and this is something you really see throughout the entire city with a lot of check points, a lot of soldiers on the ground, defense forces as well. we are literally in the city center. over there you see the midan of course right in the middle of the ukrainian capital. at the same time, though, you do get the sense that the people here have a little more room to breathe, they feel a little more secure because of the gains ukrainian forces have been making. for instance at a checkpoint like this one you do see a lot more vehicle traffic than for instance we ve been seeing in the last cup of days. there s more cars going through here. nevertheless, the situation remains ve ....
