Michigan’s highest-ranking senator has repeatedly used sexist language when referring to the governor, used the word “hoax” when describing the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, insinuated without evidence there was some election fraud - but not enough to overturn the results - called one of the largest employers in his district his “No. 1 enemy” and got censured by local members of his own party.

Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey said dead people were able to vote in the presidential election, but the Michigan State Department is calling that claim false.
Shirkey said there was too much confusion at the polls in November with so many absentee ballots, adding that the state s election was a little too loose. Too many dead people voted, and there was too much confusion at absentee counting boards, which is going to be the new reality, Shirkey said Tuesday.
The state needs higher levels of training for those who are poll workers, poll watchers, poll challengers to keep the tension down at the polls, he continued.

LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey has been in the news a lot lately, but not for lawmaking.
His comments to Hillsdale Republicans suggesting the January 6 insurrection at the United States Capitol was a hoax of some kind, his statements about “spanking” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, or inviting her to a fight outside the Capitol have resulted in a national spotlight aimed in his direction. Shirkey issued an apology for his statements, then defended his points, if not his words.
This week, he suggested the state used the votes of dead people in November’s election in an interview with Jackson radio station WKHM. About 3,500 ballots were tossed as Michigan election officials validated results and found that those people had died before November 3, but after mailing in absentee ballots, according to state officials.
