Three Northeast Florida organizations are getting shares of the $4 billion windfall that philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife, is doling out to 384 nonprofits across the country.

The Florida Times-Unionreports the United Way of Northeast Florida is getting $20 million and Goodwill Industries of North Florida $10 million, the largest gifts in their respective histories. The YMCA of Florida’s First Coast declined to disclose the amount of its grant.
“We are humbled by this recognition and the show of confidence Ms. Scott placed in us with this gift and for raising awareness about the critical issues communities like ours are facing,” said Michelle Braun, president and CEO of the area United Way. “This profound commitment is a testament to the work of our team and our partners and to the meaningful change we accomplish together.” ....

Three Jacksonville nonprofits received a portion of nearly $4.2 billion bestowed this week to 384 organizations in the U.S. by philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, former wife of Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos.
United Way of Northeast Florida received $20 million and Goodwill Industries of North Florida received $10 million. The donations are the largest single gifts in each organization’s history.
The First Coast YMCA also received a grant from Scott but declines to disclose the amount.
Goodwill CEO David Rey told Daily Record News partner WJXT-TV 4 on Dec. 17 it was an unexpected gift.
“It will help us accelerate our mission to remove barriers to employment,” Reys said. ....

United Way: $1M gift targets Jacksonville area's racial disparities


Two Jacksonville stalwarts have come together to help advance racial equity and social justice in Northeast Florida.
The 92-year-old Miller Electric has donated $1 million to the 95-year-old area United Way of Northeast Florida s long-term efforts to create change, said Henry K. Brown, the company s CEO.
Community is one of our core values … and reinvesting in the communities where we work is part of our mission,  Brown said. We recognize race equity and social justice impacts almost every issue in our society  and it will take a committed, long-term approach to make any significant change.
As the events that unfolded this year brought the spotlight on the continued race-equity challenges across the country and in our local community, we did not want to sit on the sidelines, said Brown, a third-generation leader of the company. ....

 Jacksonville-based Miller Electric Co. donated $1 million to support United Way of Northeast Florida’s focus on race, equity and social justice.
