Sweet Valley High through to It Follows, continuing to leave his own indelible mark in both film and television. With Promising Young Woman, for which Michael has just received a Director’s Guild Award nomination, he creates a world in which complicit characters cling to each other searching for redemption. Michael recently took time out to talk to Martin Carr about his involvement and what made the project so intriguing. What were the creative advantages of having a writer-director on this project? Directed by Emerald Fennell. Starring Adam Brody, Ray Nicholson, Sam Richardson, Carey Mulligan, Timothy E Goodwin, Clancy Brown, Jennifer Coolidge, Laverne Cox, Ali Hart, Bo Burnham, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Alison Brie and Alfred Molina. Promising is indeed the word for Emerald Fennell in the wake of her startling debut feature as a writer-director with Promising Young Woman. Starting with what initially looks like a commonplace story of a thirtysomething woman who needs to get her act together and then taking it to entirely unexpected extremes dramatically and thematically, the British writer/director/actress shows real nerve and skill both as a storyteller and commentator on contemporary dynamics between women and men. This Focus Features release will look to stir up some deserved attention commercially and creatively upon its mid-April domestic release. ....
