One of the first European film festivals to start back up again after lockdown, the fifth edition of the Riviera International Film Festival is scheduled to unfold between 20 and 30 May in Sestri Levante, offering up a hybrid programme unspooling online and in person.
Young people and the environment have been confirmed as the festival’s themes, but escape is what really unites the ten films in competition this year, all of which are directed by under-35s. “Escape in the sense of emigration, an escape from reality, from social conventions or in an attempt to find oneself. Escape from illness, adolescence, or for love. This common feature aside, these stories are totally different, in stylistic and visual terms too”, explains Head of Programming

BUCHAREST: Romania has been seriously affected by the Coronavirus pandemic, which shut down film production and cinemas for several months. The closing of cinemas and the decrease of TV advertisement resulted in a significant decrease of the amount of money for the national Film Fund and, as a consequence, no production grants were allotted for 2020 and most likely won t be allotted for 2021 as well.
Although officially re-launched in January 2020, when it was taken over by the Ministry of Economy, the cash rebate scheme didn t function in 2020, and at the end of 2020 most of the projects already shot since the scheme opened in 2018 were waiting for the rebate.

The plundering of natural resources which is destabilising the planet and posing a long-term threat to its balance (at an ever-increasing rate), all in the name of a profit, is an open secret. But it’s nonetheless necessary to prove these acts are taking place in order to denounce them to maximum effect and to try to bring the practice to an end (given that dogged denial is, unfortunately, common currency). Irrefutable evidence is required in order to turn a blinding spotlight on the perpetrators.
