Get the COVID-19 vaccine? For pregnant or breastfeeding women it can be a tough decision


Michelle Sakala initially planned to hold off on getting the vaccine that protects against COVID-19. 
She is a nurse with FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital and was eligible to receive it. But she was also breastfeeding her infant daughter, Monroe (think “Monroe” the president, not Marilyn, says Sakala, whose older daughter is named Kennedy.) 
“I initially said no to the vaccine when it was first offered to me,” says Sakala, who is 35 and married to an Army major. “Just because it wasn’t advised for women, or the hospital said, ‘We don’t advise you receiving the vaccine if you’re breastfeeding.’ ....

COVID-19 vaccine given to 75 and older at Cape Fear Valley

Glen Carter arrived at Cape Fear Valley Rehabilitation Center with his wife about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday to get his COVID-19 vaccine.
According to Carter, it all went smoothly. 
It really was structured really well, it really was I couldn t believe it d gone as good as it did, said Carter. I didn t feel he shot) at all. She said I was through and I didn t even know she had stuck it in. It is painless.  
Wednesday morning, Cape Fear Valley Health administered COVID-19 vaccines for North Carolina s Phase 1b, group 1 category, which included individuals aged 75 and older. 
Carter was eager to get his vaccine because he said he d been waiting on it for quite some time.  ....

Raleigh, N.C. Hospitals across North Carolina are continuing to fill up as COVID-19 cases rise, and smaller, rural hospitals are especially stressed in areas dealing with critical community spread.
“We had our highest watermark yesterday with 54 patients with COVID, in addition to the regular patients we have,” said Jason Cox, chief operating officer at UNC Health Southeastern, in Lumberton. “It’s certainly the most we’ve ever seen hospitalized here in Robeson County.”
Cox says the hospital is at 93% capacity, and its intensive care unit is at maximum capacity, with about half being COVID patients. But the biggest challenge could be personnel. ....

RALEIGH, N.C. – An emergency department head in the Sandhills on Monday said it will be at least a couple of weeks before the next vaccination phase can begin.
Dr. Michael Zappa, Cape Fear Valley Health s chief of emergency services, said the emphasis right now is on health care workers who are in close contact with COVID-19 patients. People in long-term care facilities will be next. Zappa said his team will need two to four weeks to finish this phase. He said other hospitals elsewhere in the state likely face a similar timeline. ....
