Rising Lumber Prices Slow New Home Construction in Metro Detroit and Nation
Residential single-family home permits in metro Detroit during April fell 28 percent to 371 filings as compared to March, when builders pulled 517 permits, according to a new report from the Home Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan in Bingham Farms.

Residential single-family home permits in metro Detroit during April fell 28 percent to 371 filings as compared to March, when builders pulled 517 permits, according to a new report from the Home Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan in Bingham Farms.
Looking back to April 2019 when COVID-19 wasn’t around, builders pulled 498 single-family permits, which was 26 percent higher as a seasonal comparison to April 2021. The Home Builders Association covers Oakland, Wayne, Macomb, and St. Clair counties.

(WXYZ) â The real estate market is red hot, but record-high lumber prices are driving up costs for home builders and home buyers.
Michael Stoskopf, the CEO of the Home Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan, said the cost of lumber, which was 35 cents-a-foot for per thousand board feet at the start of the pandemic, has skyrocketed since. On the exchanges right now, itâs closing upwards of $1,400 per thousand board feet, thatâs a factor of four, he said. So, if a house had $10,000 worth of just a framing lumber package in it, that same lumber package now would cost $40,000.
Novi Home Show returns this weekend with wider aisles, reduced capacity
Fifteen months after its last event, the Novi Home Show returns to the Suburban Collection Showplace this weekend with reduced capacity, wider aisles and other COVID-19 protocols to keep guests and exhibitors safe.
The show, which runs Friday through Monday and is sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan, will be spread out over 300,000 square feet. It will feature 100 exhibitors, including landscapers, builders, roofing specialists, basement refinishers, waterproofing experts and more. We’re the first major home show in the state, said Michael Stoskopf, president of the Home Builders Association. We want to do it right and we want everybody to be happy.
