QUINCY, Ill. â The Salvation Army is proud to announce the recipient of the 2020 Volunteer of the Year Award, which was posthumously given to Robert Sapp.
Sapp volunteered with The Salvation Army for 25 years in a variety of areas including in the food pantry, during special events and during the Christmas season as a bell ringer. He passed away unexpectedly Christmas day in 2020.
âRobert had a huge heart and embodied what it meant to be a volunteer,â Salvation Army Volunteer Coordinator Jeremy Koren said. âHe was always so positive and willing to help in whatever way possible, even if it was calling out numbers for those waiting to apply for Christmas assistance.â
Salvation Army Is Taking Service to the Streets
Most people know The Salvation Army is there for anyone who needs emergency assistance. However, not all people in need will reach out, and some don’t have a way to physically get to The Salvation Army for the help they need. In Quincy, The Salvation Army is taking its services on the road to seek out people in need.
On Wednesday, Feb. 24, from 4-6 p.m., The Quincy Salvation Army will begin the Canteen Ministry. Employees and volunteers will load up a vehicle and drive the streets to serve food, blankets, and personal care items to those who are hungry, homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless.
HANNIBAL â The Hannibal Salvation Army celebrated a big milestone on Thursday at the Family Store, as the 2020 Tree of Lights Christmas Campaign concluded with total funds raised surpassing the $104,000 goal by more than $14,000.
Campaign chairs Marion County Sheriff Jimmy Shinn, Hannibal Police Chief Lyndell Davis, Hannibal Fire Chief Mike Benjamin, NECOMM 911 Executive Director Mike Hall, Marion and Ralls County Ambulance Director John Nemes and Hannibal Regional President and CEO Todd Ahrens announced the Hannibal Salvation Armyâs largest fundraiser of the year reached a total of $118,576. Caseworker Amanda Bowen said the successful results will enable the Hannibal Salvation Army to reach more families and individuals in the community, and Salvation Army Area Coordinator Captain Michael Sjogren said everyone was excited about the result and the generosity that made it possible.

Quincy area coordinator Captain Michael Sjogren says they brought in over $118,000. That money will be spent on a variety of local needs and services. Holiday assistance this year included 157 gift cards for individual Thanksgiving meals at a local restaurant and food baskets for 800 families.
Over 19-thousand toys distributed to 1600 children in conjunction with Toys for Tots of Northeast Missouri. 187 volunteers donated 396 hours of service to help make the Tree of Lights campaign possible in Hannibal.
