Marlington Local Board split over school system situation

That was 18 years ago.
It has been renewed by voters three times and currently generates $3.13 million a year for the school system. But much has changed since 2003, and Marlington officials say there is a dire need for more money.
The situation is dividing the community.
A political action committee called Marlington Forward recently purchased advertising space in the Alliance Review criticizing three of the five Board of Education members.
Marlington Forward takes a critical view of some decisions. Reopening Marlboro Elementary, according to Marlington Forward, put a financial burden of more than $2 million on the district.
They are supposed to make decisions to the benefit of the entire district, said Juli Hallman, treasurer for Marlington Forward. So far I haven t seen any evidence of that since they took over. Financial forecast: Budget deficits ahead for Marlington Local
LEXINGTON TWP. After hearing sobering financial projections, Marlington Local Board of Education has approved a five-year forecast that shows the district in deficit spending each year.
The projected deficit for the current fiscal year is forecast at $1.08 million. That figure represents how much expenditures are expected to exceed revenue. Expenditures for the current fiscal year are projected at $25.93 million. The current fiscal year ends June 30.
During the Board of Education meeting Thursday night, a financial adviser, Ryan Ghizzoni, told Marlington Local officials they have three options: reduce expenses, increase revenue or a combination of both. ....

Marlington Local presents Shreffler with three-year contract

LEXINGTON TWP. Michael Shreffler is receiving a new three-year contract to remain superintendent of the Marlington Local School District.
With a unanimous vote Thursday by the Board of Education, Shreffler was approved for a contract that will run from Aug. 3 of this year until July 31, 2024. He has been interim superintendent for the past several months.
It will be my pleasure to serve the district and people of the district for the next three years, and maybe more, Shreffler, 53, said. I am very excited to stay at Marlington. We are making progress.
Under the new contract, Shreffler s annual salary will be $145,000. He pointed out this salary will be his total pay. There will be no additional pay as was the case with his predecessor, Joseph Knoll. ....

CANAL FULTON An invited group of Northwest Local residents will get a chance to meet the five finalists vying for the school district s top job.
Candidates Eric Bornstine, Hoover High School principal; Jodie Miles, assistant superintendent at Claymont City Schools; Shawn Braman, superintendent at Waterloo Local Schools; Craig Hockenberry, consultant and former superintendent at Three Rivers Local Schools; and Jude Meyers, superintendent at Gallia County Local Schools will meet with those invited community members at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Northwest High School s Puffenberger Hall, 8580 Erie Ave. NW.
Each candidate will introduce themselves and audience members will have time to ask questions, said Cheryl Ryan, director of board and management services for the Ohio School Board Association. ....
