OXFORD, Ohio â Puppy love almost killed Michael McVey.
He and his wife, Cathy, laugh about it now, but they also have a nickname for the little white puppy he adopted in 2017: Typhoid Mabel, the $53,000 dog.
Cathy had advised against getting a new pet, but Michael had his heart set on Mabel. She arrived in their home with a microscopic passenger that made the McVeys part of a multistate outbreak.
âI would say there were several times he was in serious danger of dying,â Cathy McVey said Friday. ....

As Washington County’s labor force continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, issues of attracting employees and retention have been a priority of the Washington Economic Development Group (WEDG).
WEDG Executive Director Mary Audia hosted a roundtable discussion this month with human resources executives from local manufacturing companies Bazooka-Farmstar, LLC., Brava Roof Tile, CIVCO Medical Solutions, and Atlas Roofing. Audia shared the impetus for this discussion, “When I go out and visit with business and industry, the number one thing is, ‘Mary, we need workforce, we need workforce.’ Everywhere you go, ‘We need workforce.’ And I think we hear that across Iowa, that’s a problem across our state, but we want to come up with solutions for what we have control over.” ....

SALINE, MI – It’s telling that her young son is thriving this year in virtual learning, despite his struggles with managing his behavior, parent Heather Finch said.
As a Saline Area Schools kindergartener last year, Finch said her son, who is autistic, was put in a “cell” more than 30 times in a seven-month period, leaving him “traumatized” and with “lasting PTSD.” ....

Saline Board of Education to Host Special Meeting to Assess Help in Superintendent Search

The Saline Area Schools Board of Education has set a special meeting to begin its search for a permanent superintendent.
The board will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Feb. 2, to review three firms that could be hired to help the district identify its next superintendent.
On Jan. 12, the district named Dr. Steve Laatsch Interim Superintendent until June 30. He replaces Scot Graden, who has retired from education after 13 years as Superintendent.
Board Trustee Dennis Valenti, the longest-serving member of the board, is chair of the district s search committee, which also includes Board President Jennifer Steben and Vice-President Michael McVey.
Valenti said hiring a superintendent is probably the most important decision we will make in our tenure here. ....

SALINE, MI - Saline Area Schools is looking to a longtime administrator to lead the district for the remainder of the school year, with its school board approving Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services Steve Laatsch as interim superintendent.
Laatsch was approved unanimously by the Saline School Board on Tuesday, Jan. 12, and will work with outgoing Superintendent Scot Graden, who is officially retiring Jan 29. Laatsch’s move to interim superintendent is effective Jan. 13 through June 30. ....
