Can books play a role in helping to bridge the deep cultural and political divisions in our nation? There’s no easy answer to the question, but a national series of livestreamed conversations between writers is attempting to find out.
“Write America,” which began in February, features a weekly discussion between two or three writers and sometimes artists from other fields. The series has been created by veteran journalist, novelist and playwright Roger Rosenblatt, who teaches English and writing at Stony Brook University in New York. ....

Veteran of the Year Award, new license, new banking committee chairman

Todd Hughes was honored by the Sarasota County Veterans Commission with the John H. McLain Veteran of the Year Award. Hughes is manager of the Goodwill Manasota Veterans Services Program.
The award is the highest honor that the commission bestows annually upon a veteran. Hughes served with the Army in Iraq. He was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) and, although he suffered some immediate health impacts, he completed his tour of duty before returning home a few months later.
After his return home, he was diagnosed with a serious head injury that significantly impacted his day-to-day well-being, as well as his ability to keep a job. ....
