BELLEFONTE Bellefonte Area High School has gone remote. Late Tuesday afternoon, students, parents and families in the school district were notified that the school would be closed for the rest of the week. All sports and extracurricular activities are postponed as well due to the increasing numbers of COVID-19 in the district. “Since this Monday, we have confirmed five positive COVID cases with high school students. These cases are on our current 14-day rolling average. We have also seen a general increase in cases in the past week and a half in the community,” high school principal Michael Fedisson said in an email. ....

High school graduation is right around the corner. Last year, even though the coronavirus closed schools, some stuck with tradition and held standard graduation ceremonies. Others opted for drive-through events. The Class of 2021 will graduate in the coming months and things will certainly look a little different this year. School districts will be monitoring COVID-19 numbers until graduation day. All in-person events will adhere to the state’s guidelines for gatherings, which limit outdoor events at 50 percent capacity and indoor events at 25 percent capacity. Now, it has a location. For the first time since Rogers Stadium was renovated, the district is planning for a graduation ceremony at the stadium. This comes following a survey that was sent to parents last week. At Tuesday’s school board meeting, high school principal Michael Fedisson announced that Bellefonte is planning for an outdoor graduation ceremony at the stadium something that hasn’t happened since the Class of 2016 celebrated on the natural grass. “It seems like most people want to have a more traditional graduation,” Fedisson explained. “At this point, the stadium capacity is at a 50 percent limit. I think we’re going to get (around) four to six tickets per graduate.” ....
