Judge sets trial date for man accused of Norristown fatal shooting


NORRISTOWN — A Philadelphia man will face a jury in January on charges in connection with his alleged role in the November 2020 fatal shooting of a Norristown man.
The trial for Gerard Gethers, 30, of the 400 block of West Wellens Street, will begin on Jan. 31, 2022, according to an order issued on Wednesday by Montgomery County Judge William R. Carpenter. The trial is expected to last five days.
The trial date was selected after a conference between the judge and the lawyers in the case and selected to accommodate the availability of the lawyers and witnesses.

“This date is consistent with the business of the court in dealing with the COVID judicial emergency and its aftermath. There shall be no continuance,” Carpenter wrote in the order. “Attorneys are directed to properly notify any necessary witnesses and to have them available to testify when needed.” ....

NORRISTOWN — A Norristown man is on his way to state prison after he admitted to fatally stabbing his brother-in-law and wounding another man during an altercation after attending a family birthday party.
Juan Tox Caal, 20, of the 200 block of Forrest Avenue, was sentenced in Montgomery County Court to 15 to 30 years in a state correctional facility after he pleaded guilty to charges of third-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the Sept. 22, 2019, fatal stabbing of Rolando Popsacul, 22, also of Norristown, and the wounding of a second man. Caal, who was born in Guatemala, was 19 at the time of the incident. ....
