Vaccine hesitancy in Beaver County: why locals aren't getting the vaccine.

For most decisions in life, it s smart to be thoughtful clever, even, to sit and stir, mull things over, or really take time to plan and ponder.
But the continuing spread of COVID-19 has put the decision to get vaccinated on a clock, and local and national leaders say it s running out.
This past week President Joe Biden announced his goal to at least partially vaccinate 70% of U.S. adults by July 4. With more than 56% of the population already there, reeling in another 14% over two months seems a simple task. However, a large amount of vaccine hesitation is making things difficult, and Beaver County is at its center.  ....

UPMC, HVHS Partner to Improve Access to COVID-19 Treatment
and Heritage Valley Health System are partnering to make an outpatient COVID-19 treatment more widely available in western Pennsylvania.
Monoclonal antibody treatment reduces the risk of death and the need for hospitalization in people who receive it soon after being diagnosed with COVID-19. The health systems will pool their supply of monoclonal antibodies and use the extensive UPMC network of infusion centers to provide Heritage Valley patients with the treatment.
“This treatment has potential to drastically cut the number of people in our communities who get hospitalized with COVID-19 complications and reduce deaths from this disease,” said Donald M. Yealy, M.D., chief medical officer at UPMC. “It is most effective if given within 10 days of diagnosis, and the sooner the better. By partnering with Heritage Valley, we will improve access for patients.” ....

Beaver County COVID cases spiked in December during fall surge

It was a somber scene March 16, 2020, at the Beaver County Courthouse.
Earlier in the day, county officials had received word that the first case of COVID-19 had been detected in Beaver County. That weekend, Allegheny County officials had begun ordering business closures and restricting gatherings, but county officials were initially having none of that.
The tone changed after word came that an Aliquippa School District employee had tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The board of commissioners, along with the head of Beaver County Emergency Services Eric Brewer, addressed the county, declared a state of emergency in the county and begged residents to take the pandemic seriously. ....

Doctors: 'We simply do not have adequate vaccine supplies' | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 21, 2021
(EDITOR’S NOTE: Dr. David Lopatofsky, chief medical officer, UPMC in the Susquehanna Region, agrees with and supports the following statement shared by his colleagues on the Southwestern PA Regional Chief Medical Officer Consortium.
“While UPMC is encouraged by the public’s eagerness for the vaccine, we simply do not have adequate vaccine supplies or clear notification of when and how much is coming to be able to meet the new, much larger group as discussed (Tuesday) by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
“Our health care sites and systems will need to continue to prioritize those seeking vaccination, identifying the most vulnerable in their area to serve first and to optimize impact during this time of short supply. That means many requests for vaccination will not be met in the next days to weeks, and this is not from a lack of desire.”) ....
