New Orleans to remove dozens of abandoned pay phones
New Orleans is removing dozens of abandoned pay phone kiosks across the city that have become obsolete with the widespread use of cell phones, the city announced.
In a news release, the city said that a contractor, Hard Rock Construction, LLC, would be removing a total of 77 pay phone kiosks. After the kiosks are removed they will be put up at public auction. The first batch of 10 kiosks would be removed from the Central City neighborhood.
“This is a small project in dollars, but substantial in terms of the impact to people’s everyday lives,” said Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Ramsey Green in the news release. “Removing these outdated kiosks is a big quality-of-life win for residents who live in these neighborhoods.” ....

City begins pulling out and hauling off pay phone kiosks

Central City resident Michael Burnside has been walking New Orleans neighborhoods counting abandoned pay phone kiosks. He developed a list of 77 addresses that he turned over to City Hall. And this week the city began removing those kiosks, in batches of 10, starting in Central City.
Anyone harboring nostalgia for 20th century communications devices can purchase the retired apparatus at public auctions. The first 10 removed from the Central City neighborhood will be available during the April public auction.
“Clearly the city had permitted the pay phones at one time, but research showed these are now abandoned by the owner, therefore allowing for the removal,” City Council President Helena Moreno said in a press release. “Picking up these disconnected pay phones is just one small way to show respect for our neighborhoods and make progress toward more inviting public spaces.” ....

NEW ORLEANS Crews began, on Tuesday, dismantling some of New Orleans most recent historical landmarks of the 20th Century payphone kiosks.
The city s Department of Public Works will remove the 77 payphones 10 at a time to be sold at public auction, thanks to a New Orleans resident who made a list.
When it came to figuring out which payphones to remove, New Orleans City Councilwoman Helena Moreno said one of her constituents did most of the legwork.
“This is the result of work begun by a constituent named Michael Burnside who documented countless broken payphones in all different neighborhoods and turned over the information to our office,” Moreno said ....
