The neighborhood’s name comes from its vibrant community of residents.

Deep Ellum is known for its music and art scenes and eclectic businesses. The neighborhood just east of downtown Dallas had a similar reputation during its beginnings in 1873.
A reader wanted to know more about the lively neighborhood’s start and asked Curious Texas, “Where did the name Deep Ellum come from?”
Deep Ellum in the 1920s and 1930s was home to a thriving African American business district. This was shot in the 2400 block of Elm Street near Central Expressway.(Dallas Public Library) ....
