One of New Mexico s largest vaccination clinics is hitting the pause button and will temporarily stop giving vaccines after administering shots for more than a week.
University of New Mexico Health Sciences officials say they want to ensure they have enough doses to give booster shots to people who have received their first shots. The clinic at the university s arena, also known as The Pit, is expected to be closed through Saturday.
The clinic was administering around 1,600 doses per day, with a goal of eventually hitting 3,000 shots daily. An official said the intent is still to hit that mark as soon as more vaccine doses are available. ....

Legislator Tests Positive For Coronavirus Within Capitol -

The Democratic speaker of the state House is restricting access by lawmakers to the House floor and closing off conference rooms after the disclosure that a Republican legislator tested positive for COVID-19, along with several earlier positive tests among legislative staff.
Speaker Brian Egolf of Santa Fe said Friday that he will begin restricting in-person access to House floor sessions to himself and one additional person from each political party.
That would establish almost entirely online participation in House committee hearings and floor debates. The Capitol is closed to the public. ....

Nearly one quarter of New Mexico s population has registered to receive a COVID-19 vaccination, but officials at some of the state s largest health care providers said Monday that inconsistencies with the supply chain are among the barriers to getting more shots in arms.
More than half a million residents have registered on New Mexico s vaccine website. Health officials have been urging people to be patient as the focus shifts from vaccinating front-line health care workers, first responders and those at long-term care facilities to senior citizens. Those with chronic illnesses that put them at higher risk also are on the list. ....

School Bill Challenges New Mexico Virus Restrictions -

A bipartisan group of New Mexico lawmakers is pushing legislation that would allow more students to attend class in person by shifting authority over decisions to reopen from state officials to local school boards.
The proposal follows the start of vaccine distribution to some teachers and growing pressure from parents to reopen schools and resume high school sports. 
GOP House Minority Leader Jim Townsend, is expected to introduce the legislation on Monday.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham would likely veto the bill. 
She has allowed for limited in-person learning for younger students and those with disabilities, but they cover only a fraction of students in the state.  ....

Cowboys For Trump Leader Arrested Over US Capitol Riot

A New Mexico county official and founder of the group Cowboys for Trump who had vowed to return to Washington after last week s riot at the U.S. Capitol to place a flag on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi s desk was arrested Sunday by the FBI.
Otero County Commissioner Couy Griffin was arrested on charges of illegally entering the U.S. Capitol. 
According to court documents, Griffin told investigators that he was caught up in the crowd, which pushed its way through the barricades and entered the restricted area of the U.S. Capitol, but he said he did not enter the building and instead remained on the U.S. Capitol steps. ....
