The National Hispanic Cultural Center and Art in Public Places are teaming up for the Paseo Acequia revitalization project on the campus located in the Barelas community. According to the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, the local selection committee is looking for an artist or team to create an exterior, site-specific commission project to be situated at the Paseo Acequia on the eastside of the NHCC campus.

Now the public will have an opportunity to get a firsthand look. The New Mexico Mutual Welcome Center sits in front of the Torreón, or watchtower, on campus and houses the fresco “Mundos de Mestizaje” by Frederico Vigil. ...................... On Thursday, the NHCC Board of Directors voted to begin a daily tour of the Torreón beginning May 21.

A welcome center has always been part of the NHCC master plan and the project began in 2014. At the NHCC board of directors meeting on Thursday, members were excited about the project coming to fruition. ...................... According to Josefa González Mariscal, NHCC executive director, there is no set date for the grand opening of the welcome center.
