Mexico Seeking to Join Latin American Peers in Hydrogen Push - Natural Gas Intelligence

Mexico Seeking to Join Latin American Peers in Hydrogen Push
As numerous Latin American nations announce hydrogen projects with an eye toward the global market, Mexico is looking to join the party.
“At a federal level, nothing is really happening,” Mexico energy expert Gonzalo Monroy told
NGI’s Mexico GPI, “but there are initiatives at the local level.”
One of those initiatives was the formal launch in February of Mexican hydrogen group Asociación Mexicana de Hidrógeno (AMH). Formed by Israel Hurtado, a former commissioner at Mexican energy regulator Comisión Reguladora de Energía (CRE), the organization brings together more than 30 energy companies. It also includes energy trade groups and agencies from the states of Coahuila, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Hidalgo, Campeche, Puebla and Nuevo León.  ....

TC Energy Looks to Complete Tula-Villa de Reyes Pipeline This Year
TC Energy Corp. expects to complete construction of the 886 MMcf/d Tula-Villa de Reyes pipeline in Mexico during 2021.
The construction timetable is subject to the “timely reopening of government agencies,” executives said last Thursday during a fourth quarter earnings call. Executives cited the coronavirus as impacting the project.
Upon completion, TC plans to phase-in service. The 261-mile line would connect to TC’s operating Tamazunchale pipeline, and to the Tuxpan-Tula pipeline, whose construction has been held up by a pending indigenous consultation process by Mexican Energy Ministry Sener.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has said in the past he would ask TC to seek an alternative route for the 56-mile middle section of Tuxpan-Tula because of local objections. ....

New U.S. Administration Likely Means More Natural Gas for Mexico, Expert Says

New U.S. Administration Likely Means More Natural Gas for Mexico, Expert Says
“With more of a push to decarbonize the U.S., combined with more demand from Mexico for natural gas in the short and mid-term, we are going to continue to see increased dependence on U.S. natural gas in Mexico,” Leonardo Beltrán, a seasoned expert in Mexico energy policy, told
NGI’s Mexico Gas Price Index.
“The change in administration in the U.S. is going to favor cleaner fuels, and in that regard, natural gas is the cleanest of the fossil fuels. This means that natural gas will likely continue to be favored over other commodities,” he said.  ....
