MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - There was a promising tone from health leaders at Thursday’s Memphis Shelby County Joint COVID-19 Task Force briefing.
Health leaders said this is the best point Shelby County has been in since the start of the pandemic.
They said 14 months ago, almost a million people here were susceptible to COVID-19. Now, that number is down to about 300,000.
Two-thirds of Shelby County residents has some protection from COVID-19
“Let’s just take a moment and think about what all we have achieved,” David Sweat, the Shelby County Health Department (SCHD) deputy director. “Fourteen months ago, we had a brand new virus land in our community we were all susceptible to.” ....

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - All of us at WMC Action News 5 wish you a Happy Hanukkah but the Memphis Shelby County Joint COVID-19 Task Force encourages you not to have a traditional gathering.
Officials fear holiday gatherings beyond members of your immediate household will spread COVID-19 in families.
So instead, the COVID-19 task force encourages us to be âtogether but apart,â suggesting that only those in your immediate household unite at your table improving the odds weâll all gather again for the holidays in 2021. ....

But the coronavirus has also taken its own toll on those first responders.
As of December, 227 Memphis fire employees had tested positive for COVID-19 many of whom already place their lives on the line every day.

Memphis firefighters answer every call but COVID-19 has taken a toll on the MFD. Approximately 696 firefighters have had to either isolate or quarantine during seven months of the pandemic.
“So that’s a little over 39% of our workforce,” said Gina Sweat. ....
