Independent Member of Parliament Christophe Emmanuel has said the World Bank’s audacity to interfere incorporate personnel matters at the Princess Juliana International Airport is a clear result of weak leadership by the current government and that State Secretary Raymond Knops is getting more comfortable in using the language of control towards the government and people of St. Maarten.

PHILIPSBURG: - “St. Maarten is not Bonaire, it won’t be as easy as you think,” says Independent Member of Parliament Christophe Emmanuel in reaction to an article published by The Daily Herald last week in which CFT Chairman Raymond Gradus made references to increasing taxes on St. Maarten.
In that article, Gradus is quoted as saying: “I think that more taxes should be levied in St. Maarten, and not less. The tax burden is low in St. Maarten, while the expenditure level is rather high. The Dutch government is now providing liquidity support. However, that is not forever. We are calling for an increase in taxes in St. Maarten and a reduction of expenditures.” Gradus also said: “Property tax is an efficient tax which is easy to levy, much more so than taxes on capital. ....

The Prime Minister and her government must answer urgent questions and provide truthful clarity to the people of St. Maarten about the COHO entity that is about to take over their lives. So says Independent Member of Parliament Christophe Emmanuel as he submitted a letter to the PM, via the Secretariat of Parliament, on Friday.
Emmanuel said he will “not let up” and will “not stop asking questions” about the drastic change that is about to occur on St. Maarten in return for a third tranche of liquidity support. He said Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs came to Parliament and spoke in “general terms” without providing clear answers to anything. “It was clear that she herself doesn’t know but Parliament had to rubber-stamp. PHILIPSBURG: -Member of Parliament Christophe Emmanuel was called our hero on Wednesday by the owners of the Passangrahan Royal Guest House for his public support for the property, a national monument.
The auction of the property was scheduled to take place on Thursday but was canceled after owners obtained backing from a financial guarantee bond for up to $8mln from Stockton Fuller & Company to see the landmark renovation through its next three years.
Emmanuel came out to the defense of the national monument by raising awareness and stating it would be a crying shame if it is allowed to be auctioned. He was very happy to learn that the monument was saved. ....
