Tensions building inside Minneapolis City Hall spilled into the open Wednesday as council members debated proposals asking voters to determine the fate of the police department, rent control and who should wield certain powers in city government.
During a 4 ½-hour-long meeting Wednesday afternoon, council members and city staffers at times accused each other of spreading misinformation or attempting to tip the scale inappropriately.
City Clerk Casey Carl said multiple times that he wanted to correct inaccurate statements that elected officials made. On the morning of May 26, 2020, Minnesota police spokesman John Elder sent a brief press release regarding a death that had occurred the prior evening.
Under the heading “Man Dies After Medical Incident During Police Interaction,” the statement which has since been deleted from the department’s website said that “on Monday evening, shortly after 8:00 p.m., officers from the Minneapolis Police Department responded to the 3700 block of Chicago Avenue South on a report of a forgery in progress. Officers were advised that the suspect was sitting on top of a blue car and appeared to be under the influence.
