To celebrate Women’s History Month, Chapel Hill Community Arts & Culture selected Janvika Shah to create a piece of art for a bus shelter on South Road on UNC’s campus. With her illustration, which depicts a variety of women, Shah hoped to uplift marginalized identities.
National Poetry Month is celebrated in April every year — and the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro will be celebrating this year as well.
“The town of Carrboro has been a poetry-loving community since at least going back as far as 2002, when we first established the poet laureate,” Damon Seils, the mayor of Carrboro said.
Chapel Hill Community Arts & Culture is calling on artists to apply to create public art in celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. The art will be displayed during the month of June at 140 W. Franklin St., as Chapel Hill and Carrboro celebrate Small Town Pride.

Chapel Hill's new poet laureate Cortland Gilliam recently began in his position, and he hopes to amplify suppressed voices and educate young members of the community. Gilliam's objectives as poet laureate include highlighting the voices of marginalized people and honoring the local community that has supported him through his time as a graduate student and doctoral candidate at UNC.
