we contacted an expert who did a study of the devices when used to question suspects about drug use. he says their ability to detect deception is, i m quoting now, no better than flipping a coin. again, we don t know whether the sanford police department subjected zimmerman to such a test nor if they used it as a basis for not charging him. we do know that the lead investigator had suspicions about his story. d now, the mother of a 13-year-old witness to the incident says that same investigator told her so. the lead investigator from the sanford police department stood in my family room and told me this was absolutely not self-defense and they needed to prove it. he told me, and i m paraphrasing this quote, but read between the lines. there s some stereotyping going on here. that s the mother of a young witness on msnbc. now, the 911 tape of george zimmerman s call as he was pursuing trayvon martin through the gated community he was patrol. we should warn you, right ....

like when they got here. take a look. when we got there officers found several victims throughout the classroom, throughout the building. there were several people hiding in locked buildings, locked doors, behind desks. as you can imagine, very frightened, very scared. some of them were injured so we had to rescue them out. we had to force our way into a number of rooms because they were locked behind doors. reporter: well, after the shooting the suspect fled, according to police, to a local grocery store. inside he reportedly confessed his crime to a super market worker. he was then arrested in the parking lot of that grocery store a short time later. again, at this point police do not have a motive but, of course, the investigation continues. wolf, we know that seven people are dead, three more people are injured. they re at a local hospital but are suffering from nonlife threatening injuries. wolf? dan simon, thanks very much. also tonight, keeping them honest. ....

abernethy: welcome. i m bob abernethy. it s good to have you with us. pope benedict xvi directly addressed the church sex abuse scandal this week. at the vatican, the pope told pilgrims in st. peter s square the church planned to take action in the face of allegations of abusive priests and negligent bishops. he did not elaborate, but soon afterward the vatican accepted the resignations of bishops in ireland and belgium because of the scandal. last weekend, during a visit to malta, benedict met privately with victims of clerical sex abuse and, with them, he prayed and wept. the continuing crisis in the church has left millions of american catholics sad, angry, and wondering what can be done to resolve it. we want to talk about that with margaret steinfels, former editor in chief of commonweal magazine, now co-director of the center on religion and culture at fordham university. she joins us from new york how do you describe the range of reactions among the u.s. cath ....
