now to the race for a vaccine for covid-19. it comes amid new guidance about sending kids back to school. earlier i spoke with dr. imran ali. thank you for joining us this morning. new jersey will now require kids to wear a mask in school buildings even while social distancing. i want to know, what are your thoughts on that? well, a lot of schools want to open, a lot of parents want their kids to get back to school. and some places are definitely hot spots. for example, mississippi. 1 out of every 5 covid tests are positive, and icu beds are filling up. governor tate tomorrow is going to talk about schools reopening, and i think masks are going to be a big factor. we know cdc guidelines are people, kids over the age of 2, 2 and above, should wear a mask. and the mask should be well-fitting. i recommend parents not to get the ones that go around the ears because then kids fuss around with them. they re either too tight or too loose. get a nice, colorful, comfortable mask, bu
it is in other parts of the state. as coronavirus cases rise and california reverses plans to reopen, it s clear the bay area isn t out of the woods yet. how bad is it? the counties when you look at the entire bay area are not as bad as some of the worst-hit conditions, not as bad as los angeles or imperial. reporter: take a lookat this graphic showing daily cases rising in the bay area. on july 10, there were 809 new cases, not including at san quentin. now compare that to los angeles county. on july 10, they had 2,620 cases, more than three times the bay area. still, cases and hospitalizations are surging in every bay area county. even in san francisco, which is one of the two bay area counties not on the state s watch lift, the number of patients in the city s hospitals is nearly three times what it was at the lowest point a month ago. there is also new concern about the reproductive rate, the average number of people that someone who has coronavirus will spread it to.
